LECTURES

Typeface construction

Letters we need to design:        a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , .         OR           A E T K G R I Y M P N ! # , .

The step to digitise and create or construct the sketch by ourself:
1. Open a file in Illustrator ( New > File > Custom- Present Details: Typefaces Design, Width &    Height: 1000pt, Orientation: Vertical, Art board: 1, Bleed: All 0pt, Colour Mode: CMKY Colour, Raster Effect: High (300ppl), Preview Mode: Default )
2. Drag the dartboard to the top left corner and duplicate it in to 2 more art board.
3. Extend the last art board into long rectangle to develop all the characters and letterforms in.
4. Create a rectangle (Width: 5000points, Height: 500 points.)
5. Letters and rectangle sit within the art board.
6. Create the simple structure ( Command R > Drag and drop the guide line from the top to identify the median line, baseline, ascender height, cap line and the last is the descender line )
7. lock the guides ( Right click . Lock guides)
Figure 1.0 ( Sample of the settings)

It have 2 ways to design my letterforms : Shape tools & Pen tools

Shape tools
- Choose the shape that we want
- Duplicate all of them including the guides to a new dartboard after done making the rudimentary construction to maintain the original parts.
- Always finesse it in the second art board that has been duplicated
- Combined all the shapes (Pathfinder > Shapes Mode > Unite)

Transform the letterforms from Illustrator to Fontlab

1. Measure the height of letters in the cap height, ascender height and the descender height
2. Combined the shapes of the letterforms
3. The process of transform the glyphs to the Fontlab
    - Create new font file ( File > New font )
    - File > Font Info > Names & Copyright > Family Name: Give ur letterforms a name then name it >
Weight: Regular > Width : Normal > Style name: Named it > PS Font Name: Named it > Full Name
Named it > Menu Name: Named it > Ok.
    - Metrics and Dimensions > Key Dimensions: Key in the values > ok
    - Import the letterforms by copy &paste.
    - Press Fontlab > Preferences > Paste & duplicate ( click on: Ignore stroke & colour, place
monochrome contours, Ignore original position prefer AI vector format, Keep position it available.)
    - Double click on the letter cell.
    - Go back the Illustrator > Drag the x-coordinate and y-coordinate, place it left down of the letterform
      > Copy & paste every letterforms to Fontlab.
    - Windows > New Metric Tab > Open show text bar & Show metrics table.
    - Adjust the letter's size buy the table below make it all letters are have the balance space.

FONTLAB

We need to transfer the typeface we designed from Illustrator to Fontlab by watching the lectures  that Mr.Vinod posted in the Youtube.

POSTER (make type great again!)

We need to create a poster with the words that Mr. Vinod gives. We need to create by using the typeface that we design our own.

FEEDBACK

Week 10

Specific feedback : Sketches need to be done into digitisation.
General feedback : Letters can be be designed into more fun, and y, a, t, i, need to be correct it.

Week 11

Specific feedback : Correct the letters (p, y, a, r, #, !) to be more balance with all letters.
General feedback : All letters look not balance, the size was not same.

REFLECTIONS

FEEDBACK

In this last project I feel it is very fun for me about the typography and had learn many things from this project such as typefaces, kerning, and how to use Fontlab and create own typeface design. Next, I also learn many things about how to transfer the typefaces we design our own form illustrator to Fontlab.

OBSERVATIONS

This project I feel was most fun for me, and I I had learn how to design my own typeface design by using shape tools to finish my typeface design.

FINDINGS

In this few weeks I feel typography is not all about words only  it have more to learn and know the rules of typography and how we can formatting a better text for people to read.
