LECTURE 1: TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS

All design is based on a structural system. There are 8 major variations according to Elam which are:

   - Axial
   - Radial
   - Dilatational
   - Random
   - Grid
   - Modular
   - Transitional
   - Bilateral

1. Axial system: Information divided into groups on a single line, placed at different angles or sides, could be straight lines or bend.

2. Radial system: Elements are extended from a focal point.

3. Dilatational system: Element expand from a central point in a circle.

4. Random system: Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship. Even if it's random but there's a method for using this system.

5. Grid system: Vertical and horizontal divisions, usually use in books.

6. Transitional system: In an informal system of layers banding. Headline be larger in a band, while other text remain smaller in their single band.

7. Modular system: Non-objective elements that are constructed as standardised units. Allows to move the individual units to different portions of the page, for replacing another unit on the other side. Units can be randomly placed.

8. Bilateral system: All text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.

EXERCISE 1

1. Open Adobe Indesign > custom new document > (Width = 200mm, Height = 200mm, Units = Millimeters, Pages = 2, Columns = 3, Column gutter = 5mm, Margin all = 10mm > Create
2. Select both pages (1&2) > right click, Untick (allow selected spreads to shuffle) > drag the 2nd page to the 1st page > add another 2 pages and do it the same
3. Paste the information > arrange the information properly > select all the information then go to the formatting paragraphs > Character style > select the font among the 10 typefaces (I choose ITC Baskerville Roman) > font size (12pt), Leading (14.5pt) > paragraph formatting controls > space after (14.5pt)
4. You going to arrange what typography system you want
5. the numbers need to change > select the number > Character style > Small caps

LECTURES 2

Principles of Design Composition: Fundamental principles like emphasis, symmetry, and alignment guide the arrangement of design elements for visually appealing layouts.

Figure 2.1: Emphasis on Typography (Week 2; 02/05/2024)

The Rule of Third: Rule of third is a photographic guide to composition, it basically suggest that a frame can be divided into 3 columns and 3 rows. The lines are used as a guide to place the point of interest.

Figure 2.2: Rule of Thirds (Week 2; 02/05/2024)

Environment Grid: The design system is based on the exploration of an existing structure or numerous structures combined. An extraction of crucial lines both curved and straight are formed.

Figure 2.3: Example of Environment Grid (Week 2; 02/05/2024)

Form and Movement: This system is based on the exploration of an existing grid system. The placement of a form on a page, over many pages creates movement. Whether the page is a paper or screen is irrelevant.

Figure 2.4: Example of Form and Movement (Week 2; 02/05/2024)

EXERCISE 1: Typography System

3. Size: 200x200mm.
4. 1024px, 300ppi.
5. One other colour, other than black.
6. Graphical elements (e.g. lines, dots), limitedly.

PROGRESS

Figure 3.1: Exercise follow the lectures

Figure 3.2: First design

My first design and arrangement is the title are in the middle and I feel the tittle can be not all in a same line so I put them into left and right arrangement, and the (date & time) at the bottom, the school at the top right and lastly other put at the left side.

Figure 3.3: 2nd and 3rd design

My 2nd design is the tittle still at the middle but it much tidy compare to Figure 1.2 the title is separate into both side but not is two line together at a side and another two line at another side, it look more tidy. Next the third design is with 2 lines and all information are separate in a box.

Figure 3.4: Final outcome of Axial System

The title is separate into both side but is not two line together at a side and another two pink line art another side, it look more tidy. Next the third design is with 2 lines and all information are separate in a box.

Figure 3.5: Final outcome of Radial System

The radial system I bigger the tittle size and bold them so it is very obvious to show that it is a title so it draw viewer eyes. The pink circle is the centre point of the tittle and I choose this pink is because it is not to strong so that viewer first look at is not the circle.

Figure 3.6: Final outcome of Dilatational System

The dilatational system I design it with 4 circle from small to big, the first circle is fill with pink colour and it is also a centre point in there. I arrange the information according to the size form big too small, which mean the biggest one is the important.

Figure 3.7: Final outcome of Random System

I bigger the tittle and it and the opacity is 100% but other is 30%, 50%, 10% and it also fill with pink colour but in the 10% opacity and other information are place at the bottom of the tittle, it also have different opacity.

Figure 3.8: Final outcome of Grid System

The gird system is according to the grid that sown in the indesign and I put a pink colour line in the middle to separate the tittle and the information so it is very clear fro viewer to see.

Figure 3.9: Final outcome of Modular System

The modular system I arrange the title at the middle of the left side and upper part also have 3 information there to look no so empty, and the last information is place at the right bottom to fill the empty space.

Figure 3.10: Final outcome of Transitional System

The transitional system is I design the tittle to make it like flowing and have 2 half pink circle at the both side to decorate it. The information is place at each corner.

Figure 3.11: Final outcome of Bilateral System

The bilateral system I put a circle in the middle but up abit cause the title in the bottom of the circle need bigger space, and the other information is place at the top and the bottom. The circle of the colour I choose light pink cause it not to strong to catch the viewer eyes.

EXERCISE 2: Type & Play

This task, we need to select and image, of a man-made object, or structure or something from nature. Ensure the image doesn't contain many different elements.

We need to analyse, dissect and identify potential letterforms within the dissected image. The forms would be explored and ultimately digitised.

Image that I am going to used:
Figure 4.1: Image that I chose (Week 3: 09/05/24)

I had traced the letters that I found form the image and there are ( L, A, Y, B, V)
Figure 4.2: Traced letters (Week 3: 09/05/24)

Figure 4.3: List out the letterforms (Week 3: 09/05/24)

Figure 4.4: Step of refinement (Week 3: 09/05/24)

The step from tracing - refinement - final fonts.
Figure 4.5: Steps and Font reference (Week 3: 09/05/24)

The final font that I had refined

The final font that I had refined is I make the font bold, also contain the round and not tidy design. It is because coral is irregularity formed, so I keep the design in the fonts.

Figure 4.6: Final outcome of fonts (Week 3: 09/05/24)

Figure 4.7: Final outcome of font in pdf

Figure 4.8: Background I used (Week 3: 09/05/24)

Figure 4.9: Poster with my fonts (Week 3: 09/05/24)

I had changed the colour of the fonts, because my background is abit dark so it cannot use black colour font. So I change to blue, to see the tittle clearly.

FEEDBACK

Week 1
Specific Feedback:  - Adjust size of the font.
 - Change the colour, to look not so sharp.

General Feedback:
Need to follow the meaning of the typography system.
- Do more draft.

Week 2
public holiday

Week 3
Specific Feedback:
-Find related image to match my letters.

General Feedback:
- The letters is not refined many.
- Resize according to the grid.

REFLECTIONS

ExperienceI feel refining letters is quite fun and interesting, but in the poster part is quite challenging because I in the first part that we find the letters from a image, I didn't manage to find the letters that form a word so I in the poster part I can't manage to find a poster that related to the meaning of the word.

Observations: The exercise one, is a most challenging part, because we need to think and create our own design for the 8 typography system and need to keep re design to got a most good.

Findings: I found that typography actually is very important, because when we design a good letters or the typography system, it will let the reader to have more interest to read your text or poster.
