LECTURER
- Key artwork is a wordmark/lettering, but is also an artwork.
- The key artwork can be disassembled into constituent shapes to form
vibrant patterns that continue to maintain and expand its visual
identity.
Contrast according to Rudi Reigg: To create differentiation between
information, distinction.
Contrast According to Carl Dair; added texture and direction. ( 7
Contrasts)
- Size = Provides a point to which the readers' attention is drawn to
firstly. Big letters are read first. Title and heading are made noticeably
bigger.
- Weight = How bold the type can stand out in the middle of lighter
type. Rules, spots, squares can also create heavy areas of powerful emphasis.
- Structure = Different letterforms of different kinds of
typefaces . Exp: moonlike sans and a traditional serif.
- Texture = Combining the first four into a composition creates
an interesting texture. The way the lines look as a whole closeup and form a
distance.
- Colour = Second colour makes it less empathetic in values rather than
a BnW composition. It's important to give thoughts to which elements need
emphasis and to pay attention to the tonal values of the color used.
- Direction = Opposition between vertical and horizontal direction of
text. Turning words on its side can create a dramatic layout.
General Process of Type Design
1. Research
- understand type history (context, perspective) anatomy (understand different
parts), conventions (unwritten rules)
- terminologies, side bearings metrics hinting
- examine existing - inspiriting
- purpose?
2. Sketching
- traditional - scan ; better control
- digital - consistency but>natural stroke from hands
3. Digitisation
-from and counter form is important = legibility and readability
4. Testing
- result of testing is process of refining
- more rigorous = less problem
5. Deploy
- understand pros and cons, hot it behaves in its environment
- feedback is important
FORM
= Overall look and feel of elements making up the camp.
Good typographic forms: Intriguing, leads the eye from point to point,
entertain the minds and is memorable.
Typography is used to represent a concept and to do so in a visual form.
Interplay of meaning and form brings a balanced harmony of function and
expression. When a typeface has been distorted, extruded etc, it's no longer
seen as a letter but as an object.
ORGANIZATION / GESTALT
Max Wertheimer = It refers to the way a certain item is placed or put
together. Gestalt psychology attempts to understand the laws behind the
ability to acquire and maintain meaningful perceptions. Wertheimer developed
laws predicting how perceptual grouping occurs under different circumstances A
designer should always understand a visual perception.
It applied to every aspect in design because it emphasises that whole is
better than parts. We experience things as unified hole and we're not going to break them down in smallest elements.
a. Law of Similarity: Elements similar to each other tends to be
perceived as a group.
b. Law of Proximity: Elements close to each other tends to be perceived
as a group.
c. Law of Closure: Mind's tendency to finish off figures even when it's
not.
d. Law of Continuation: Tendency to perceive each of 2 or more objects
as different, singular and an uninterrupted object.
e. Law of Symmetry: Simplicity.
f. Law of Simplicity: (pragranz)
PROCESS and WORKS
At first, I thinking what letters I'm going to use, my name is
Tan Sing Yee then I use (T S Y and an E) to done this project.
Next, I think some idea for draft, I had think of 2 ideas
1. slimy and sticky
2. circle and cute
I draft out few design with these 2 idea:
Figure 1.1: some sketches.
(Week 4, 15/05/2024)
First Design
- I want to make it slimy style, at first I didn't at the connected lines into
the font, but without the lines it doesn't look so slimy. Then I at some lines
that connected form a point to another point it look more sticky feel now. I
also make those corner into round shape/oval shape so it look bold, like water
drop.
Second Design
- This design is I wanted to look cute and funky fonts. Every font have a
circle to point out the feature of the font and the font doesn't have a proper
shapes. I design them into bubbling feeling.
Third Design
- This font is very proper and straight. This font is quite normal and didn't
have any unique part so I just sketch out not consider it.
Forth Design
- This design is I use the third design to redesign to be more unique and
special. I thicken some parts to look more attractive. I also added some lines
on the font to make it more fun. The lines is bring out the water licking
down.
Fifth Design
- I also use the third design and I just at some connected lines on it. The
line is connected form a font to another font. This design is taking from the
first design, just to see the first design looks smooth and nice or the fifth
design.
Digitalisation
I had choose the first design in this task. My first digitalisation font is in
Figure 1.2, mr Vinod had suggest to thicken the lines and this, and I forgot
we need to design atlas 4 fonts so I add one more 'E'.

Task 2(b)
We need to design 3 Collateral and I had choose shirt, tote bag , and a note book. I use light grey to do the background.
3. I choose a beige colour T-shirt which is the lightest colour in my colour palette and for the font I
use green colour which is the darkest colour in the colour palette. I put the 4 font in to 4 parts
(up, down, left, right), it looks more creative and playful style.
Figure 4.3: First Collateral.
(Week 6, 29/05/2024)
4. For the tote bag I choose a light blue colour also form my colour palette. The design I use the
random system that I had learned from the first task. I put the 4 fonts randomly and repeatedly,
then I put the opacity into 30%, but I choose 4 font and put their opacity into 100%, to point out inside
there have the 4 fonts.
Figure 4.4: Second Collateral.
(Week 6, 29/05/2024)
5. The note book I chose a strong blue colour also from my colour palette. I use the 4 fonts to
design left and right to looks more clean and simple.
The posts that I posted in my instagram.

Next we need to create a instagram account for this task

FEEDBACKS
Week 5
Public Holiday
Week 6
General Feedback: Thicken the font and then connected lines, add one
more fonts this task at least need 4 fonts.
Specific Feedback: The colour palette is ok to use, but done the black
font first only start doing with the colours.
Week 7
General Feedback: Find another collateral to do, change the colour
don't look so complicated with the background, background must be simple so it
only can show out out works.
Specific Feedback: Use the school background to do the self portrait,
arrange the post properly in the instagram feed, look more tidy.
REFLECTIONS
Experience
My Experience is at first is quite blur and no idea, then started to try out some creative font and start thinking some theme to start the draft. Then when design the first fonts the ideas slowly coming in so I design few fonts in the end.
Observation
My observation is when we design is not only what we see, we must consider when they are minimalist or when they are large size, it sill look same or will change the font, we must care all parts. Beside, when choosing the colour palette we also need to be careful we need to think how we need to use the colour palette carefully if not it will crash the colour and cannot see the contrast.
Findings
My findings is the knowledge of design is very important, the things that we had learned form task 1, we also can use it in this task when we had no idea of creating the design, we can use the typography system. In this task I had gained a lot of knowledge of creating a brand and how important the colour, size, thickness is it. This is quite a challenging task and also some fun in it.
